Okay, the Sisters of Mercy portion of last night's Sisters of Mercy show just sucked. That was a show with terrible sound, where the performers knew it. Eldritch did his best for a few songs, wandered off in disgust for two songs, and spent the last few bitching out the audience and the venue between lines, knowing damned well nobody could tell what he was saying. I wonder if the band did something to seriously piss off the sound crew before the show, because it was that kind of bad.

But there were pleasant surprises, too. It was a great 'scene' show, where damned near everybody I know in this town showed up. April & Doug made a rare appearance, and, naturally, D knows where I can get a silencer for that Ruger. :) Mercedes and her present entourage were there, too, and it was awesome to catch up with her. My original guests were unable to attend, so I redistributed my two extra tickets at the last minute, and got to spend even more time hanging out with Kat, yesterday, which can only be a good thing. Lindsey even managed to get us a table, so we all got to sit in the cool kids' section.

The happy find of the night, though, was Hypernova. They're a 4-piece rock band from Tehran, whom Sisters picked up in New York as support for the current tour. I hadn't heard of them until last night, but I haven't taken their CD off repeat all day. They play very tightly arranged guitar rock, and I couldn't help comparisons to live Editors, or Interpol - it's that cool. I don't know what an Iranian education in rock music is like, these days, but they write their music with all the twists of perspective that only come from growing up just outside the scene - This is a band with something to say about our music. See them live if at all possible - despite a lyrical command of the language that's not quite what it could be, and a couple of tracks that slow down a live set, the energy is infectious. If you're not on the touring path, give a listen to Fairy Tales, then Empty Days, and you should know whether or not they're your cup of tea.

[This is Kat's copy of their album Through the Chaos, since she's the one who scrounged up autographs from all the guys after the show. I'm just... holding onto it for her. For safe keeping. Honest.]
