So, I was changing out of my work clothes last night in the parking lot at Mandalay Bay, and I kept wondering who had the brilliant idea, for a Baroness/High on Fire/Opeth show, to open its doors at 5pm. Think about it. At 5pm, I think the true metal snob should either be working at a shitty, hazardous job, or sleeping off an even shittier one. I guess it's 2am in Stockholm, which is a little better, but still. Not cool.
I got it, though, eventually; Opeth actually had two and a half hours of material to do. So doors at 5 was just about right. As everyone I talked to at the show was amazed to hear, it was the first time I'd ever heard Opeth - I got a lot of people telling me I was in for a great show.
High on [Motherfucking] Fire was THE band I went to see, though. And they rocked the place. It was great to watch so many people in the crowd get their first taste - they opened with an older track I couldn't name, then did a sped-up version of Cometh Down Hessian, which started a pit that didn't stop moving until they went off stage. Proud to say I was tired, bruised and sick of yelling before Opeth even went on.
After the openers, Opeth started out with some of their newer material, in kind of a Dream Theater/Midnacht Sol vein, in that it switched back and forth between different styles (here's the classic-guitar part; here's the operatic part; here's the speed metal part, etc.) Which was all well-done, but it meant I had to wait a few songs before I really got a handle on their sound, which is about as good as everyone told me. It makes a lot of big, unexpected moves, but it's all sincere, and there's purpose behind all of it. And apparently they just put out their ninth album, so if I really wanted to get to know their stuff, I'm sure it'd keep me busy for a while.
I'd never seen Baroness before, either, and they really impressed me. Again, I wish their opening numbers had been a little more energetic, but within a couple of songs, I got what they were doing, and I was really digging on it.
I went out for food afterwards with Matt & Aimee, and woke up with a couple of the most righteous bruises ever. A whoop-ass evening. Cheers to the many old and new friends I ran into (or ran over) at the show, and I hope I'll see you all at Blackest of the Black next month.
Rock on,
C
